Designing and governing sustainability transitions requires unprecedented levels of systems integration, participation and inclusivity. Practices of transition design and management around the world combine participatory innovation design with strategic planning and foresight methodologies, among others. They are mostly used by multi-stakeholder consortia, who have or are in the process of establishing transition arenas, in which to build the transformative capacities, knowledge and levers needed for transitions to sustainable socioeconomic futures.
